Forever by Danie Mellor's covers the huge glass wall at the main State Library Station entrance on the corner of Swanston and La Trobe streets.
The artwork features historical photographic portraits of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung women set in contemporary landscape imagery taken by Mellor on Wurundjeri Country.
The historical portrait photographs were sourced from the archives of the neighbouring State Library Victoria with assistance from the library’s curatorial team. Mellor used infrared photography to create the landscape imagery that serves as a layered setting for the significant historical portraits. The artwork is an act of storytelling that acknowledges Victoria’s First Peoples and especially women, honouring their social, familial and cultural contributions to Melbourne.
Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders were consulted in the development of the artwork.
Celebrated Victorian First Nations artist, Maree Clarke, has created Tracks – a line-wide artwork that spans all 5 stations. Clarke’s artwork showcases native fauna found across the traditional lands and waters of the 5 Kulin Nation clans – Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, and Bunurong / Boonwurrung. Maree’s artwork comprises large scale floor mosaics created from coloured granite. The granite was cut using a waterjet, with each piece finished and assembled by hand. There are a total of 35 footprints featured across the 5 station platforms.
The footprints at each station have been chosen by the artist from native animals (living and extinct) found in the different natural habitats across Kulin Nation Country, which includes Greater Melbourne and parts of south-central Victoria.
The station’s service buildings on Franklin Street also feature imagery of Wurundjeri women Elders, created by Greenshoot Consulting in collaboration with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung elders, particularly Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin. Featuring both contemporary and historical Elders, these works celebrate the important role of women within First Peoples communities.
